Homeless
Veteran Standown
April 16th, 2009
Stand Downs
are one part of the Department of Veterans Affairs' efforts to provide
services to homeless veterans. Stand Downs are typically one to three
day events providing services to homeless veterans such as food, shelter,
clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counceling,
and referrals to a variety of other necessary services, such as housing,
employment and substance abuse treatment. Stand Downs are collaborative
events, coordinated between local VAs, other government agencies, and
community agencies who serve the homeless.
Homeless veterans received special attention at the American
Legion post in Wilmington. The Tri-County Homeless Interagency hosted
the ninth annual Homeless Veterans Standdown. Homeless vets and others
enjoyed breakfast, lunch and a variety of other free services.
Veteran Shannon McGill was once homeless, and he said similar
services have helped him get back on his feet. "It felt good to know that
I was able to get help and that there was facilities and people there
to help me, to get me back where I needed to be," said McGill.
Free long distance calls were one of the perks today. The hope
was that people would reconnect with other vets, friends and family for
the holiday weekend.
